Scary movie marathons have been a thing since getting too old to go trick or treating left angst-ridden teenagers out of the costume-clad holiday. Thankfully, we’re now adults and boozy soirees have reinvigorated that nagging urge to participate, but there’s only so much drinking a body can endure before begging for a recovery, sit on the couch and do nothing, session. Why not put on a movie while you’re at it? Of course, doing so should be within the spirit of the holiday. And it’s with this in mind that we put together a list of Halloween flicks perfect for any scary movie marathon.
After their mother passes away, sisters Nicole and Annie return home to pay their last respects. While staying overnight, the sisters are greeted with a plethora of ‘nope’. Unidentifiable noises and moving objects start to raise some concerns but things get really creepy when Annie begins experiencing a series of intense and disturbing dreams.
When a carefree teenager sleeps with her new boyfriend for the first time, she learns that she is the latest recipient of a fatal curse that is passed from victim to victim via sexual intercourse. What unfolds next throughout It Follows is a creepy dream-like aesthetic wrapped in tension that would make any Halloween movie marathon a truly horrific event. And we mean that in the best way possible.
TRAIN TO BUSAN
OK, so this one is more of a foreign thriller, but good god is it an interesting piece of fiction! Train to Busan follows a group of passengers who struggle to survive on a train when a zombie outbreak occurs. Do yourself a favor and add this to your Netflix queue, your scary movie marathon friends will certainly appreciate it.
THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL
Samantha, desperate to make some money and move into a new apartment, does what any small town college girl would. She gets a babysitting job. But when she arrives at the house, Mr. Ulman, her new employer, explains that there is no child. Instead, Samantha will be watching his mother. After a little exploring, Samantha discovers a horrifying Ulman Family secret that involves unsuspecting houseguests like herself.
True-crime writer Ellison Oswald is in a slump. He hasn’t had a best seller in more than 10 years and is increasingly desperate for a hit. So, when he discovers the existence of a snuff film showing the deaths of a family, he, of course, moves his own family into the victims’ home and gets to work snooping for his next big inspiration. However, when old film footage and other clues hint at the presence of a supernatural force, Ellison learns that making the move may have been a mistake.
The Davisons are an extremely wealthy family that’s become estranged over the years. In an attempt to mend their broken ties, Aubrey and Paul Davison decide to celebrate their wedding anniversary by inviting their children to the weekend estate. The celebration gets off to a rocky start and relationships deteriorate further until a couple of crossbow-wielding party crashers show up and force them to rely on one another for survival.
TRICK ‘R TREAT
Trick ‘r Treat follows the residents of a small town as interwoven stories lead to the discovery of real ghosts and goblins on Halloween. Tales of terror reveal the consequences of kid-friendly lore such as extinguishing a Jack-o-Lantern before midnight and much more in this creepy, weird as hell cult-classic.
Six high school friends with a dark secret receive a Skype message from a classmate who committed suicide a year prior. It’s considered a joke between the group, but when the murders start the laughing stops as each member is logged out permanently.
MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN
Art doesn’t only imitate life, it imitates death as well. Midnight Meat Train follows a photographer’s obsessive pursuit of dark subject matter as it leads him to a serial killer who stalks late-night commuters, ultimately butchering them in the most gruesome ways imaginable.
Don’t Breathe isn’t your typical things-that-go-bump-in-the-night type of Halloween thriller. In fact, it’s the fairly simple tale of three reckless thieves who break into the house of a wealthy blind man thinking they’ll get away with the perfect heist. Spoiler ahead: They don’t.
THE BLACKCOAT’S DAUGHTER
This atmospheric indie isn’t rife with jump scares or cheap thrills. It’s a slow burn suspense horror that follows a troubled young woman who embarks on a mysterious journey to an isolated prep school. Here she finds two stranded students and an unseen sinister force.
